If you look back at the science fiction of yesterday much of what you’ll see the technology of today, therefore most what is fantasy today has a good chance of becoming reality tomorrow. Many of the good science fiction authors write about gadgets that are actually in at least the idea stage. Most of these are practically possible; they just need one or two small kinks to be worked out to become real. Once at that point, they can be marketed and sold to the public. The communicators of Star Trek look strangely like the mobile phones of today. Were they modelled after an idea or did the idea come from watching the show? How about those scanners and medical injection devices? We’ve seen those too, haven’t we? And another thing, that view screen on the bridge looks strangely like the flat screen TV that you’re paying those home insurance premiums for, doesn’t it? What will the future bring? To answer that question you need to look at some of the technology of today. For home gadgets that would be green power sources and lasers. Recharging power cells in the sunlight or with a back yard windmill will keep those household appliances running for a long time without ever having to plug them into a wall. It will also make them smaller, lighter and more portable. GPS technology is another science that is still in its infancy. The ability to “see” where any object is located can be useful in finding a stolen car, but what about more practical applications like locating your keys or wallet. There are already Bluetooth devices in development that can help blind people locate common objects in their home by lojacking them and assigning a signal to each. Imagine waking up in the morning and not being able to find your coffee cup. Wouldn’t it be nice if it could tell you where it is? Finally, there are the pet gadgets. We all love our furry and feathered friends and many pet owners were relieved when computer chips were developed, so that could be surgically implanted to prevent animal loss. Invisible fences were another device that helped maintain the beauty of a home without the need for an ugly above ground fence. Can these two technologies be combined? Perhaps in the future we’ll see it happen.
