According to IDC’s Worldwide Quarterly Enterprise Networks Trackers, with the timely aid of virtualization and voice over IP (Internet Protocol) – two of the most popular software applications, Ethernet switch revenue has increased to over 32.7 percent year after year during the second quarter.

The adoption of technologies like the Gigabit Ethernet and the Power over Ethernet is what they consider as the cause of the said growth – not to mention the continuity of the adoption of the said technologies. The use of the Power over Ethernet, according to the director of Enterprise Communications Infrastructure of IDC Rohit Mehra, is actually caused by the need to power IP phones and access points for wireless LANs.

According also to IDC’s research, there is also year over year increase of 87.9 percent in the revenue from 10-Gigabit Ethernet and, for the first time in Ethernet history, there were over a million ports shipped in just one quarter. IDC also said that the surprising increase of the use of 10-Gigabit Ethernet is caused by virtualized data centers and cloud computing.

More monopolized networking architecture, according to Mehra, will increase the importance and dependence for more networking capacity in the data center due to the adoption of virtualization.

As of late, Cisco is still reigning as the leader in the Ethernet switch market, and just in the second quarter their revenue share increased up to 65.8 percent, which came from 62.8 percent during the same period in 2009. On the contrary, Cisco’s second quarter show some decrease in their share, only arriving to 68.3 percent in 2010’s first quarter, which was exceptionally a strong quarter for the said company, IDC shared.
