Landscape Design Made Easy January 12, 2009
Even if you have no previous landscape design experience, creating your home’s landscape design is a great do it yourself project. Aside from the enjoyment you’ll get from seeing your new and improved yard and garden, curb appeal for your home will improve which also increases resale value.
Sometimes the most difficult part of a landscape design project is knowing where to start. A great way to begin is by walking through your neighborhood. Look for flowers, plantings and landscape design layouts you like. When you see a design plan that really appeals to you, knock on the door and introduce yourself. Let the homeowners know how much you like the look of their yard and ask if they will share plant names and other valuable information with you. It’s a great way to meet your neighbors!
Next visit your local library, a wonderful resource for all DIY projects. You’ll find books on landscape design, plant information and gardening tips that will help you determine how you want to proceed. Many books offer pre-planned landscape designs you can copy that give the name and quantity for each plant material needed to get a picture perfect yard.
Then visit garden shops that offer a wide variety of plants and flowers. It’s easy to get carried away by all the beautiful plants so bring your landscape design and buying list with you. Ask the garden store staff to help you find the plants you want and to offer suggestions for alternate plants that may be better suited for your region. If you plan on major landscaping you should consider breaking the project into manageable sections that can be installed over a weekend or a few days.
With careful planning and a bit of elbow grease, your new landscape design will be beautiful!
