Memphis Climate Depends on Surrounding States April 14, 2009

Rising above the Mississippi River in the Southwest corner of the state of Tennessee sits Memphis. Memphis only recently has been taken over in metropolis size by Nashville, but at over 1.2 million people, Memphis is still quite a large metropolis. With all of those people, Memphis has a reputation of high crime. Though some years are better than others, Memphis still tops the ranking of cities with the highest crime rate.

The climate in Memphis, Tennessee, is unique in the fact that many areas contribute to its weather. If the city is getting its weather from Texas, the summer could be hot and dry but if the weather if flowing up from the Gulf of Mexico then weather can get quite muggy. There is little rain in the summer months with a few short thunderstorms, but the majority of the rainfall is in December. In winter Memphis might see a little snow but no more than two inches.

While the Chickasaw Indians previously inhabited the area, in 1818 Andrew Jackson, John Overton and James Winchester founded it. They chose the area of Memphis because it would naturally ward off the Mississippi River and any would be attacker. Its vicinity to the river made it an ideal spot for trade and commerce.
