NoHabits to the Point of Boredom! August 27, 2009

When we as humans experience something new for the first time, our brains get to work trying to figure it out. It tires to tie it to prior experience, to familiar objects or stimuli, and make a connection with it so that we can comprehend and understand it. poker is no different. When you see your first royal flush, you may be so flabbergasted by it, you don’t know what to do with your monster hand. And so on and so forth goes the game with all the different lines of betting, and lines of strategy, but eventually, even the greatest and most passionate players, go through what is called habituation. We essentially become disinterested because we have habits down pat, and we rarely stray from them. Not only will doing this make you an exploitable player, but by doing so, you’ll be in for a loss. Why? Well, quite frankly, you’re bored, and when you’re risking money, boredom is something that will make you a losing poker player quickly. But habituation is not always a bad thing. You just need to be able to recognize if it’s affecting your game negatively or positively. If it’s becoming negative, then you need to take a break, but think about the positive aspect. You see a poker player and have habits against him that are winning habits. This is good habituation. You know when he bets a certain number of chips you can put him on a small range of hands. Or if you see one player bet, you know he has AA or KK since he calls everything else. So to sum it up, there’s a good and bad side to every coin, but if you find yourself on the boredom end of habituation when dealing with poker, take a break or hiatus from the game until you’re ready again to pick it back up with passion.
